Spiritual experiences are of such a unique and personal nature that sharing one's experience with even the closest friends and family is an exercise in vulnerability. Because the mainstream culture remains largely uneducated about such events, traditional psychotherapists are also unlikely to have training in recognizing and understanding STEs. Yet, the way that one is received when he or she is choosing to disclose such an intimate event can have deep effects on how one comes to understand and integrate the experience.
Interviewing dozens of experiencers has taught me that holding sacred space for you to share in your own words, in your own time is the foundation of a successful therapeutic relationship. I am not the expert on your experience, but together we can assess the practical concerns your experience has brought up and consider what interventions would be most beneficial to help you ground yourself while you process the impact your STE has had on you, your relationships, and your daily life.
My desire to support those undergoing spiritually transformative experiences stems from having successfully negotiated my own ineffable experiences. The most powerful experience occurred during my early adulthood when I had an unsolicited unitive experience. The event, for which I had no name at the time, produced a spontaneous expansion of consciousness that at once seemed to merge me with all others, while simultaneously providing me with an overwhelming sense of love. With no framework through which to interpret the profundity of the occurrence, I refrained from disclosing the experience to anyone for many years. Finding a community of peers and professionals literate in such phenomena has been of tremendous benefit for me, and I find it an immense privilege to hold space for others to disclose, process, and integrate their STEs.
Spiritually Transformative Experiences can be traumatic because of their intensity and isolating because they are so personal and culturally misunderstood. Yet, with the proper support, self-care, and resources, STEs can be integrated to serve as catalysts for connection with our highest potential.
