How I can help

As a near-death experiencer who helped found ACISTE, I have a deep passion and purpose in life to support people who've had spiritual experiences. I know on a personal and professional level that STEs can bring an array of challenges, including dealing with new values, finding one's purpose and learning how to negotiate with two realities. Post STE challenges can be stressful as sometimes we no longer know what the best choices or priorities are. We can feel isolated and alienated. Sharing in a validating environment with someone who gets you and who can provide experienced direction can be truly transformative.

A particular specialty of mine is to coach people who've had STEs as a result of a suicide attempt (as was mine), teenagers who've had STEs, and people who need coaching while also dealing with depression or anxiety. Coaches do not do therapy, but they can help you find focus, potential, purpose and direction for the future - all while caring and supporting you along the way.

I have a number of tools that I've developed in my years of coaching as well as those I've learned from other experienced coaches. I draw from these tools and experience to help you get where you want to go, to be what you want to be, to discover and act upon your potential and purpose in this life.

My Spiritual/Religious Background

I was raised as a Catholic, but when I became disenchanted with some of the principles, I eventually turned atheist at the age of 19. At the age of 32, I was severely depressed and wanted to end the pain I was dealing with. Instead I had a near-death experience that cleared up any doubts about a spiritual reality. It answered all my frustrations at the time, but it also challenged me to rethink my whole way of being. I struggled to find a new purpose, That took decades before I discovered that I was not alone. When I finally opened up, I met many STErs who helped me redefine my values, potential and purpose. They were my guides and the reason I helped to found ACISTE.

My Philosophy

I believe that each person is a unique and precious gift to this world. Having had an STE can be the beginning of the unwrapping of that gift. To discover one's gift/purpose/potential in the world is much easier with a partner who listens unconditionally and does not judge. I also believe that in order to best serve others, we should first be able to love and respect our imperfect selves.

My Personal Interest in STEs

I had never heard of out-of-body or near-death experiences when I had mine in 1982. The first close friends and some relatives I shared it with shut me down. I didn't talk about the experience then until after a student of mine shared his NDE in my English class. This was the beginning of a long and painful journey for him - as his friends ostracized and ridiculed him. He dropped out just before graduation. My heart went out to him. I felt there was a reason this happened. I quit teaching and began coaching. My student's experience was the beginning of a long journey back to my own NDE and ultimate involvement in a group led by Bev Brodsky in San Diego and then as President of the International Association of Near-Death Experiences (IANDS). It was there that I saw a need for a collaborative organization devoted exclusively to supporting experiencers dealing with issues related to their STEs. ACISTE was formed as a result. I guided ACISTE through its formative years and now that so many good people have stepped in to help, I can redirect some of my work back to helping individuals.
